Our Wonderful Welsh Adventure at Farms for City Children

Last week, volunteers from The Florrie took a group of children on a wonderful adventure to Wales, with coastal walks, meteor-spotting, working on a farm and more.

Based at Farms for City Children in Treginnis Isaf, they explored beautiful coastal walks, watched dolphins and seals, they fed donkeys, pigs chickens, geese and turkeys and milked the goats. The children also enjoyed holding baby chicks and grooming and taking the donkeys for walks – and, in true farm-style, they even scooped up the poop for composting. Some of the kids had never been part of anything remotely like this before, away from home on a memory-forming adventure, which also included witnessing a meteor shower, evening BBQs, gardening and tending to the vegetable patches and going to the beach.

The Florrie is a volunteer led charity and built on donations big and small and the team hopes to create more fantastic adventures for the community. For children who have never experienced such life-enhancing journeys, making new discoveries and friendships, it’s been heart-warming for everyone who took part, to the children’s families and The Florrie’s staff.

Laurence Fenlon, The Florrie’s Chief Operations Officer, explains: “We want to say a huge thank you to The Steve Morgan Foundation for making this happen and all the amazing staff at Farms for City Children in Treginnis Isaf. They created an experience the children will be talking about for years to come. We’re immensely proud to be able to create these trips for children and we aim to do more – The Florrie is an independent charity and to achieve this, we need more donations to realise our aims. For anyone who is able to donate and help these projects come to life, every single donation is hugely appreciated by us but also, more importantly, the families who use our services.”

Since Farms for City Children was founded in 1976, over 100,000 children and young people have taken home the benefits of being farmers for a week. Their immersive residentials embed invaluable connections with nature, food and farming.
