The Restoration

The Grade II listed Florence Institute occupies a unique place in the historyofyouth facilities as the first buildingin Great Britain to be constructed specificallyas a boy‘s youth club.Amarble plaque in the entrance lobbyreveals that it was built byBernard Halt,a former Mayor ofthe City,in memoryofhis Daughter Florence. It was erected in the hope that it might prove an acceptable place ofrecreation and instruction for the poor and workingboys ofthis district ofthe City“and opened for this purpose in 1889.

For 90 years it served its purpose admirably, although it did move awayfrom its founder‘s intentions from the end ofthe Second World War when it began to cater for the needs ofall the community, includingthe much neglected girls ofthe area. The Florence survived the Second World War but was badlydamaged byan arson attacksome years ago and has been unoccupied ever since.
