THE FLORRIE

Food Donations

With Christmas fast approaching and our food stocks running low we are looking for food donations to help us support people during the cold winter months.

Here at The Florrie we always try and help the people in our community. Whether that’s just sharing a cup of tea and a chat with someone or giving people a place to learn something new in our community classes. In recent years one of the biggest problems we’ve noticed is the growth of food poverty which seems to be rising and rising exponentially.

During the summer we did our bit by running our Holiday Hunger Scheme. We provided children from the local area two meals a day at a time when many parents struggle without the support of school dinners. We served over 1000 meals and we couldn’t have done it with out the support of the generous people who donated food either directly to us or to the donation bins at Tesco Park Road. As part of the scheme we used donations to give out food packages the the families who were coming in, helping to support them further.

Around this time other people started coming into our building asking for help. People who were going hungry to make sure others in their family didn’t; older people who were struggling by on a pittance of a pension; people who needed short term help after an unexpected bill. Young or old there was no set demographic to the people who needed us. Bit by bit we started sharing food with more people and after the summer was over we continued to help people.

In recent months – especially since the roll out of Universal Credit – we’ve seen a massive increase in people coming in and asking us for food. One of the saddest stories was a lady who came to us after spending a weekend living off baby food after being sanctioned. With Christmas fast approaching and our food stocks running low we are looking for food donations to help us support people during the cold winter months. Anything you can give would be a massive help and would go directly towards helping people here our community.

Donations can be dropped off here at The Florrie, 377 Mill Street, L8 4RF anytime during our opening hours 9-6 Monday, Wednesday and Friday or 9-9 Tuesday and Thursday.
